Performs the simpler types of work in the inspection, repair, testing, adjustment, installation and removal of all power plant equipment and buildings.  Duties are:


  1. Perform work of the following level in the shop or outside the shop when assisting an employee of higher classification:


    • Do rough filing, chipping, grinding, sanding, sawing and scraping


    • Bolt and unbolt joints on piping and equipment


    • Clean gasketed surfaces


    • Make and install simple gaskets


    • Operate portable electric or air tools, such as drills, hammers, grinders, turbines and demolition guns


    • Operate chain hoists and other portable lifting devises


  1. Operate power hacksaw, drill press, floor grinders, small pipe and bolt threading machine and other equipment of this type.


  2. Move and handle equipment, materials and supplies.


  3. Clean surfaces with brush, scrapers, chipping guns and solvents and apply protective coatings such as red lead and other primers, tar and asphalt base paints, grease.  Do unskilled painting.


  4. Operate heating units such as blow-torches, furnaces, oxyacetylene torches and perform rough cutting and burning at the direction of an employee of higher classification.


  5. Clean and lubricate equipment.


  6. Mix concrete, mortar, refractory and insulating cements.


  7. Remove and make simple repairs to thermal insulations.


  8. Maintain shop and location where work is performed in a neat and orderly condition.


  9. Set-up temporary safety barriers and protective screening around work areas.


  10. Operate elevators where an attendant is required.


  11. Learn the approved methods of artificial respiration.


  12. Perform other similar work of the Maintenance Department.


  13. Assist Maintenance Department employees of higher classification.  This includes nuclear fuel handling operations as directed.


  14. Operate Company passenger cars and pick-up type trucks or equivalent.



    Must meet the Company's “General Requirement”; and, in addition:


  1. Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.


  2. Must have successfully completed the appropriate Pre-Employment Tests except that an employee hired prior to May 1, 1977, who has or obtains a high school diploma or its equivalent does not have to complete the Pre-Employment Tests.


  3. Must demonstrate:


    • The ability to follow simple instructions and carry out routine assignments


    • An aptitude for mechanical work


    • Keen faculties of observation


  1. Must be able to qualify for an auto driver's license to operate vehicles in the State of New Jersey.



     Because this job requires driving to company locations and off-site assignments and events, must possess a valid driver’s license with a safe and satisfactory driver history.
