Department Summary

The Engineering Internship Program is geared toward current college students who have a passion for Engineering and an interest in Consumers Energy and the energy industry.  The Engineering Internship Program at Consumers Energy has core principles of skill development, ability enhancement, and knowledge application – experience designed to be complimentary to traditional classroom instruction.

 

Job Description/Responsibilities

Current college students of all levels will work as part of a larger team to provide hands-on support and design / development for various engineering aspects of our business.  This could include work in energy delivery – electric engineering, energy delivery – gas engineering, energy operations, and more – all while helping create a better tomorrow for the communities we serve!

 

In addition to working alongside full time employees carrying out the engineering function for Consumers Energy, Engineering Interns will have the option to participate in a number of additional optional events within the program. This includes intern networking events, company tours, and the consistently top-ranked philanthropic event, the Intern Challenge.

 

There are so many new, exciting opportunities in the world of engineering. It’s a very exciting time for Consumers Energy; come be a part of the history – and fun!

 

IMPORTANT NOTE: This posting does not represent a specific position and is posted for the purpose of collecting resumes for students interested in an Environmental Engineering internship opportunity with Consumers Energy. This may be within the Environmental department, but could also include engineering internship opportunities within the gas distribution or generation segments of the company. Opportunities could include summer 2019 Internships, fall or spring co-op, part-time year-round co-op, etc.

Requirements/Qualifications

Actively enrolled and pursuing an ABET accredited bachelor's degree in Engineering, with a specific focus in Environmental Engineering. MUST be a current student to be eligible for an Intern role.

 

Minimum GPA requirement of 2.7 or higher.

 

The following skills and experiences may set you apart from others:

  • Hands-on experience with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)
  • Knowledge of MS Outlook is ideal
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to new assignments and projects
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills are critical
  • Must possess the attitude and aptitude to learn new skills and concepts
  • Ability and willingness to work independently or as part of team in order to complete tasks
  • Prior work and/or internship experience is a plus

 

Location of the internship may vary depending upon assignment and travel within the State of Michigan may be required.

 

Essential Functions

Planning, design, construction, and maintenance of Electric and Gas Distribution and Electric Generation systems as well as facilities and ancillary support process for all utility operations.  Duties and who this individual reports to will fluctuate between projects, Practice Areas, and offices. Individual possesses the skills to lead, problem solve, and work well in a team environment.  Individual should exemplify safe work practices and follow the company’s compliance standards.  Lead and/or assist with engineering projects to include design, plans, inspections, system planning, specifications, reports, maps, environmental impacts, permits, contracts, schedules, estimates, surveying, easements, data collection, construction observation, and field investigation.  Provide engineering services with accuracy, integrating all applicable governmental and company laws, standards and procedures on time and under budget. Use computer assisted engineering, design, and drafting software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents.  Understand and follow company established standard procedures for file structure and standard drawing procedures for projects  Become familiar with plans and specifications, maps, and related material for each project and be able to utilize the information appropriately.  Assists in client contact and communication.  Utilize effective oral and written communication skills to provide technical expertise to coworkers, clients, customers, government entities and the public.  Public involvement may include producing reports, graphics, presentations, and other visual material as well as occasional speaking or meeting with stakeholders. Attend internal and external meetings.  Provide all engineering services in a legal and ethical manner. Reviews operating and construction sites to monitor progress and other duties per the design documents.

 

Hours and Travel

This position requires the individual to typically work 40 hours per week with 85% of time spent in the office or specific field locations. Travel is required to job sites and project meetings and could be significant dependent upon location.  Individuals need to be willing to work additional hours as necessary to meet deadlines or assist with storm restoration activities. Individual should be willing to participate in the on call rotation in case of potential storms. Individual may have to work outside of assigned headquarters to help with storm restoration which may require overnight stays Individuals must have a valid driver’s license.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The noise level on the construction site is often loud.
