The Hostler will be responsible for moving trailers in and out of the warehouse and drop lot areas.  This will include taking trailers to scales, and washing and servicing tractors and trailers as needed. 


Essential Job Functions include:

  • Operate company vehicles in a safe and professional manner complying with Federal, State, local laws and Hill’s guidelines.
  • Promote and employ safe work practices for handling product on and off company vehicles.
  • Perform SAP-WMS system, RF scanning and related SAP systems.
  • Spot both inbound and outbound trailers
  • Perform backing maneuvers
  • Perform basic tasks such as connecting air and power lines to the trailers
  • Cross train on loader and high stacker positions
  • Maintaining operating knowledge of all equipment and processes within the cell (including all updates to equipment or processes)
  • Perform basic maintenance and PM's of all equipment within the cell
  • Transport ingredients, packaging and finished goods to designated locations
  • Bring the tractors and trailers to leasing service depot for washing and maintenance service
  • Take trailers to the scales, when necessary, for weighing
  • Provide coverage on other shifts for vacation, PTO, disability, etc.
  • Complete a daily lot check of drop trailers at the off-site lot
  • Must participate in DOT screening and physical processes
  • May complete job responsibilities of other bid positions in the facility
  • Be responsible for achieving plant-wide goals concerning production, quality, safety and customer satisfaction  
  • Interest in learning and contributing as part of a team including participation in cross-functional activities
  • Understand and apply creative problem solving techniques
  • Demonstrate flexibility in work schedule and tasks
  • Accountable for meeting or exceeding safety standards according to the published Hill's Safety Policies and Procedures at the Topeka Plant
  • Adheres to GMP's (Good Manufacturing Practices)
  • May complete job responsibilities of other bid positions in the facility
  • Applying seals to outbound trailers/shipments
  • Monthly mileage readings on Hill’s leased Tractor/Trailers
  • Maintain Trailer organization of Plant Yard and Drop Lot
  • Communicate with Security, Receiving & Shipping on all Inbound/Outbound Truck traffic
  • Understand and comply with Hill’s policies, safety standards, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and Food Safety. Identify and report Food Safety issues to management


Basic Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED certificate required
  • Commercial Driver’s License Class A, including Air Brake endorsement
  • Minimum of 2 years professional driving experience
  • Satisfactory completion of background check including Motor Vehicle Report (MVR)
  • Pass a road skills test
  • Ability to operate material handling equipment (forklifts, hand trucks, etc.)
  • Ability to climb in and out of truck repeatedly
  • Ability to lift up to 60 pounds repeatedly
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings
  • Ability to pass and retain DOT Medical Certification as required under FMCSRs 393.41.
