Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Purpose:

Complete 14 month Precision Manufacturing program through West-MEC Central Campus (Glendale, AZ) while receiving on-the-job training (OJT) to prepare candidates for a career in the Machining Trade. Continued employment will be contingent on successful completion of program. Strong mechanical aptitude, good math skills, and a desire to learn are the key to this position. The initial training will be on day shift, then shift assignment may change based on business needs.

 

Scope of position:

Learn to operate and adjust machines to produce high quality component parts and assist in the maintenance of the machine and tooling used with assistance from qualified machinists. Learn to perform quality inspection of finished components throughout the process.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Learn to read and interpret prints, routings, layouts, and related documents to produce component parts that meet design specifications in order to satisfy company quality standards.
  • Learn to operate jobs routed to the assigned machines with assistance and meet the production standard required for the given department.
  • Learn to perform various machine functions such as turning, drilling, reaming, threading.
  • Learn to inspect component parts to print using micrometers, calipers, thread gauges plug gauges, comparator, etc. throughout the process.
  • Learn to complete necessary paperwork on a daily basis.
  • Learn to perform routine preventive maintenance on assigned machines, and maintain proper coolant levels and concentrations on a daily basis.
  • Learn to troubleshoot some machine and tooling problems and correct and adjust a necessary with assistance.
  • Maintain safety and quality standards using acceptable housekeeping practices on equipment and work area.

 

The above description covers the most significant duties performed but does not exclude other occasional work assignments not mentioned.

 

Hours of work:

Monday – Thursday, 9:30am – 5:00pm OJT and 6:30pm -9:30pm West-MEC . May be scheduled for overtime as needed Upon completion of the West-MEC program, apprentice will transition to a regular 1st or 2nd shift on a 12 hour rotating schedule, 5am-5pm or 5pm-5am

 

Required Education: High School Diploma/ GED
