Scope of the Position:

Do you want to apply your technical curiosity to build unusual solutions to business challenges? What about using your interest and ability to learn, develop, and advance your technical skills in mechanical design, process equipment development, robotics, material handling, and system integration? We want you as a member of our multi-functional engineering team, working through all stages from concept generation and development, detail design/build, system integration, and start-up to support Corning’s Manufacturing Support facility.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide daily manufacturing production support reviewing/modifying/creating blueprints, becoming the expert executing critical JETCAM nesting software, assisting the process/mechanical engineer and performing quality inspections
  • Maintain KANBAN system and inventory levels for cost reduction and available supply
  • Work with project team members to solve difficult mechanical engineering and process equipment related problems, resolve project related issues, and develop understanding of process and equipment design requirements
  • Craft machine design specifications, error budgets, and mechanical design concepts. Design and follow construction of prototype and production process equipment, conduct proof of concept and prototype tests to validate design concept, collect and evaluate data, and make appropriate engineering recommendations
  • Your focus will be on the design, system integration/debug, installation, and production start-up of process machines, machine components and material handling systems, and training of plant personnel
  • You will be responsible for acquiring knowledge of assigned areas (tolerance analysis, component specification, process requirements, machine functionality, material selection, error budgets, etc.)
  • Work with external vendors, system integrators, and suppliers to successfully deliver assigned areas of responsibility to overall project team on-time, on-budget, and to meet process performance measures
  • Support the generation of construction drawings (using 2D/3D software packages), installation drawings, and ensures that final drawing packages reflect as-built conditions and satisfies Corning drawing standards
  • Report on project activities, status, and issues on a periodic basis to project & department leadership
  • You should be capable of working in a team based environment and able to participate on a highly matrixed project team to execute project assignments, with minimal supervision

Education and Experience:

B.S. Mechanical Engineering
0-3 years of experience in Mechanical Engineering

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

Normal Business Hours (8 – 5, M – F), however, expected to work hours required to achieve project objectives

Travel Requirements:

Estimated travel is 10% depending on specific project assignments. Travel may be required during installation, debug, and start-up and for routine interaction with customers and suppliers, including some international

Required Skills:

  • Basic understanding of materials, process, mechanical design, and robotics to enable the development of cost effective process machine systems
  • Ability to use experimentation to develop basic process knowledge, design prototype test systems, and perform proof of principle testing to validate approach
  • Familiar with state of the art technologies in the following areas: electro-mechanical drive systems, material handling, fluid power, pneumatics, robotics, alignment, part sensing, and safety standards
  • Ability to effectively use external machine builders and system integrators for detail design, build, and integration of later stages of machine system implementation
  • Proven skills in 2-D and 3-D CAD, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, and knowledge of ANSI Y14.5-1994 drafting standard
  • Self-starter who is results- oriented, possesses a high dedication level, and is able to meet objectives and timelines while applying sound problem solving and decision-making processes and skills

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of welding and metal fabrication
  • Prior knowledge of JETCAM software
  • Entrepreneurial, forward-looking, with knowledge of glass and ceramic manufacturing and precision engineering principles
  • Experience with use of standard computer modeling and analysis software packages used in design of mechanical systems, including Solidworks and AutoCad design software
  • Experience crafting systems for deployment in “clean room” or “contamination sensitive” applications and prior experience moving a new product / process from development into manufacturing

Soft Skills:

  • Ability to work on a diverse project team and effectively high levels of uncertainty, ambiguity, and change
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
