Scope of Position: 

  • Provide optical modeling support of display systems to guide research and development team in design and product specification of next-generation displays.
  • Develop and implement optical and photometric measurements to support product development and, manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with scientists across research and manufacturing to development testing methods and transfer the technology to manufacturing plants as needed. 
  • Work with commercial technology leaders to understand customers’ needs and technology roadmaps and develop measurement strategies or optical designs to support.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Take customer needs and turn them into products that deliver value to both the customer and Corning.
  • Design and model novel display architectures that use advanced materials to create advantaged components.
  • Measure and report key optical properties of glasses used in displays (transmittance, reflectance, haze, DOI, scattering, color, brightness, etc…)
  • In partnership with Corning Development and Research groups, establish correlation between glass optical properties and display performances (transmission of glass vs. screen brightness for example; or color contrast, color shift, resolution, sparkle, etc.

Travel Requirements: Domestic and international travel may be required

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40 hours per week

Job Title: Optical Scientist

 Required Education and Experience:

  • MS or PhD preferred
  • 2+ years’ experience in related field

Required Skills:

  • Experience in optics, optical modeling and measurement design
  • Major in physics or applied optics, engineering a plus
  • Optics knowledge beyond spectroscopy and biological imaging is required

Desired Skills:

  • Solid experience of optical simulation, especially of non-sequential ray and Fourier based optics.  A background in scattering theory (optical or other) is an advantage
  • Understanding of photometry and experience in psychophysical analysis of display systems
  • Equipment programming, such as LabView or Matlab, is a plus
  • Understanding of laser-material interactions
  • Knowledge of statistics and advanced data analysis
