About Us

Denver's Parks and Recreation Department is seeking Recreation Instructors (*On Call) to instruct one or more Arts & Culture programs geared towards preschool aged children.

We are looking for instructors to teach the following class formats:
  • Mini Picassos: Inspiring children through hands-on art, Mini Picassos is designed to provide an opportunity for children to use their imagination and creativity to develop fine motor skills. All while learning the basic principles of art such as colors, shapes and texture. Parental participation is encouraged.
  • Music & Movement: Children will take part in a social setting while learning sing along songs, circle time games, dance, music and playtime activities. Parental participation is required in the parent-child style class.
  • Sing & Play: Children will sing and play with a teacher who plays a musical instrument! This class includes rhythm, songs, dance, music (including songs in Spanish) for children and their parent(s)/caregiver(s).
Denver Parks & Recreation offers Arts & Culture programming throughout the year at many of our 27 recreation centers. We offer a wide variety of classes in areas such as: fine arts, pottery, ceramics, sewing, music, dance, creative writing and a wide range of crafts and creative early childhood programming (18 month - 5 year olds) and cultural programs. The classes typically consist of around 4 to 12 participants. Programs are broken into four general sessions and each class typically runs for a pre-determined number of weeks. Our programming offers Instructors the opportunity to teach a variety of age groups including: preschool, grade school, teens, adults, and seniors.

About Our Job

As a Preschool Arts & Culture Recreation Instructor (*On Call) you have the opportunity to indulge in your passion for creative programming while enriching the community around you! These positions provide instruction to preschool aged children (ages 6 months - 5 years) in organized arts & culture classes and activities while ensuring a safe and enjoyable learning environment.

Preschool Arts & Culture Recreation Instructors will be responsible for instructing one or more of the aforementioned arts & culture programs offered to preschool aged children and their parent(s)/caregiver(s).

We have openings for the following:
  • Mini Picassos Instructor at Central Park Rec Center
  • Music and Movement Instructor at Central Park Rec Center
  • Drawing and Painting at Central Park Recreation Center
  • Music and Movement at Carla Madison Recreation Center
Job Responsibilities:
  • Provides instruction to participants in organized recreational program, classes and activities.
  • Organizes, leads and teaches a variety of recreation programs, activities and classes.
  • Develops curriculum or instructional plans to achieve established objectives.
  • Executes instructional plans using prescribed and accepted teaching methods, including coaching, group and individual instruction.
  • Provides safe and supportive learning environment for all participants.
  • Evaluates and communicates student/participant progress and provides recommendations for improvement to students and participants.
  • Effectively communicates with participants, parent/guardians and the general public. Answers questions effectively and appropriately. Follows up with customers as necessary.
  • Set ups and takes down necessary equipment prior to and after classes or games and including cleaning and organizing.
  • Reviews completed program participant evaluation tools and uses findings to increase program and instructional effectiveness.
  • Assists in the organization and administration of special events.
  • Assists in training new staff members.
  • By position, performs various tasks to maintain a Recreation Center and/or provide program administrative support.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
  • Any one position may not include all of the duties listed. However, the allocation of positions will be determined by the amount of time spent in performing the essential duties listed above.
* On-Call status = A position in which the incumbent works as needed. On-call positions may have routine or variable work patterns and are generally filled to accommodate seasonal or short term activities in various city agencies. The Preschool Arts & Culture Recreation Instructors will work an average of 5 - 10 hours per week.

About You

Preschool Arts & Culture Recreation Instructors must have a passion and knowledge of arts & culture activities, and should possess strong skills in communication and organization. We are looking for candidates who are enthusiastic in teaching children and are able to engage participants in a classroom setting. Additionally, our ideal candidate will possess one or more of the following:

  • Associate's degree or higher in a creative arts field (such as fine arts, crafts, performing arts, music, etc.) or childhood education/development or a directly related field
  • Possession of certifications or have taken classes in a creative arts filed such as, but not limited to: fine arts, crafts, performing arts, music, or a directly related field.
  • Experience with early childhood education.
  • Proficiency in one or more of the following arts & culture elements (i.e. skilled enough to teach in a childcare setting): Music - vocal and/or instrumental, dance, theater, crafts, visual art.
  • Experience in classroom management (i.e. guiding activities, working with materials and equipment, behavior management, conflict resolution, etc.)
  • Prior experience planning, managing or coordinating creative arts programing
  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Bilingual skills

Education Requirement:
Graduation from high school or possession of a GED certificate plus six semester hours of course work in an arts and culture program, recreation field, elementary or secondary education, behavior management or a related field.
Experience Requirement:
One year of experience in assisting in the operation and instruction of organized recreation activities.
Licensure and/or Certification:
By position, requires a valid driver's license at time of application.
Requires certification in CPR/First Aid within 6 months of hire.
Licensure and certification must be kept current as a condition of continued employment.
Education/Experience Equivalency:
Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirement
Additional appropriate experience may be substituted for the minimum education requirement except for the high school diploma/GED Certificate.

Hiring Range: $14.42 - $15.00
Assessments / Testing: This position does not require testing.
