The Role

The Senior Communications Consultant leads the development and execution of internal and external communications programs for Lincoln’s annuity solutions, insurance solutions and/or retirement solutions distribution businesses. He/she collaborates closely with business leaders, subject matter experts within his/her specific business unit/assigned areas of responsibility, and communications partners across the enterprise, to ensure that all communication efforts support the business unit’s short and long-term goals and objectives, and align with the objectives of enterprise partners.

 

Responsibilities

  • Develop robust and innovative strategic media relations, internal communications and thought leadership plans that support business initiatives and sales goals. Responsibilities include drafting and pitching press releases, securing business leader interviews with key trade media, developing story ideas and placing bylined articles; identifying news and industry trends to further external awareness of company initiatives.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with key trade reporters that cover our company, our industry and the topics of interest to Lincoln.
  • Lead the proactive execution of strategic and tactical media relations and thought leadership programs to promote, protect and enhance the reputation of the business, and favorably position the business and its leaders in targeted consumer, business, and trade media outlets.
  • Develop strategic internal and external communications materials (press releases, media advisories, briefing documents, talking points, memos, video scripts, intranet content, speeches, and other related materials) on a variety of topics for a wide range of audiences, as needed.
  • Collaborates with distribution business leads, marketing professionals, product communications partners and leaders throughout the company to proactively develop strategic communication plans that are aligned with business objectives.
  • Support the management of crisis communications activities, including the development of talking points and holding statements.
  • Partners with LFD and LFG  social media and content strategy teams to ensure alignment with business initiatives; identifies opportunities to leverage content across the distribution business
  • Directs and enhances organizational initiatives by positively influencing and supporting change management and/or departmental/enterprise initiatives within assigned area(s) of responsibility
  • Maintains knowledge on current and emerging developments/trends for assigned area(s) of responsibility, assess the impact, and collaborates with senior management to incorporate new trends and developments in current and future solutions.
  • Ensures communications areas are meeting all objectives pertaining to quality, compliance, regulations, productivity, customer service and project management.
  • Establishes benchmark and performance metrics to track communication effectiveness progress while maintaining constant focus on the bottom-line impact.
  • Leads and/or participates in efforts to define metrics and measurement for communication programs and tactics.
  • Advises internal stakeholders on key trends, issues and news within corporate communications space.
  • Applies benchmarking data and performance metrics to continuous improvement of communication efforts.
  • Carries out responsibilities in compliance with all state and federal regulations and guidelines. Complies with all company and site policies and procedures.
  • Remains current in professional and industry trends.
  • Makes a positive contribution as demonstrated by:
    • Making suggestions for improvement
    • Proactively learning and mastering new skills, procedures and processes
    • Performs other duties as required

 

Education

  • Undergraduate degree or 4+ years of comparable work

     

Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in Corporate Communication or related environment.
  • Confident, comfortable communicator with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong presentation skills with demonstrated ability to influence at all levels of management through clear, informed and logical discussions/presentations.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret both internal and external documents such as general media/publications, professional journals, technical procedures, governmental regulations, policies, proposals, and standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as probability, statistics, modeling, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical solutions.
  • Works with mathematical concepts such as averages and/or variances.
  • Ability to analyze complex information and to evaluate the implications of a course of action or solution.
  • Ability to interpret and apply common sense understanding to carry out a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to evaluate trends in data or information.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in technical writing skills (grammar, punctuation, tense, usage, etc.)
  • Ability to translate complex and complicated topics, issues, products, situations or opportunities into simple and compelling language that achieves communication goal.
  • Ability to generate content for use across traditional and digital channels, including print, web, social, video.
