Job Summary

The Children’s Hospital Of Philadelphia (CHOP) Research Institute is recruiting a new team to build a data and informatics program called “Arcus” that will link clinical and biological data and provide world-class computational tools to solve the most challenging problems in child health.   Recognizing the central role of data to the future of pediatric research, CHOP leadership and the Board of Trustees committed to a funding plan, and Arcus was launched in July 2017.  The Arcus team integrates with major scientific initiatives in the Research Institute Strategic Plan: Lifespan, Rare Diseases, Novel Devices and Therapeutics, and Precision Health.  We seek mission-oriented professionals with interest and expertise in the areas of biomedical science, library science, data education, data science, cloud computing, data privacy, and security.


The Arcus Supervisor of Data Education (DE) will lead the development and implementation of education and outreach programs that promote high-impact use of data made available through the Arcus platform to CHOP researchers. The Supervisor of DE will build a team of educators who will plan, implement, and operationalize strategies to improve the overall data-intensive research capabilities of the CHOP research community. Examples include outreach campaigns that increase awareness of the data, services and tools available from Arcus; educational programs that help CHOP researchers initiate and carry out Arcus-based studies; and educational programs that expose biomedical researchers to data management, provenance and analytic methods applicable to biomedical data broadly, and Arcus specifically. 

Job Responsibilities

1. Recruit, hire, and manage a team of data education specialists
2. Develop performance and evaluation metrics for data education at CHOP
3. Analyze current training and education needs, forecasts future directions in data-intensive science
4. Collaborate closely with Arcus Library Science and Applied Data Science leadership to co-develop Arcus-focused curricula and training programs
5. Develop novel biomedical data management and analysis courses that support the goals of the Arcus program
6. Evaluate, select, and structure curricula of university-based and online coursework to
7. Operationalize the delivery and continuous evaluation of Arcus data education programs

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree in data science, analytics, or related discipline

Required Experience:

1. 2 or more years of experience in technology education
2. 3 or more years of experience leading an education, technical or data management team, ideally in a biomedical or scientific domain.
3. 10 or more overall years of experience in a technical role, ideally in a biomedical or scientific domain.
4. Bachelors required, masters preferred in data science, analytics, or related discipline
5. Demonstrated track record of curriculum development, lesson planning, and student evaluation
6. Demonstrated track record of outreach and interaction with biomedical researchers

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Education: Master’s Degree in data science, analytics, or related discipline

Preferred Experience: Experience in a biomedical or scientific domain

Additional Technical Requirements


  •  Demonstrated track record of curriculum development, lesson planning, and student evaluation
  •  Demonstrated track record of outreach and interaction with biomedical researchers
