Title: Virginia History Affiliates Coordinator

Division: Education & Engagement

Reports to: Director of Community Partnerships

Position Status: Full-time; Exempt

Starting Salary: $40,000/year

Position summary:

The History Affiliates Coordinator works as a member of the Education & Engagement Division, reporting to the Director of Community Partnerships. The Coordinator will play a key role in developing and implementing a new program designed to strengthen ties between the Virginia Museum of History & Culture (VMHC) and history organizations across the Commonwealth. This affiliate network of history museums, historical societies, historic houses, and other like-minded organizations will, with the leadership of the Coordinator, emphasize the sharing of collections, exhibitions, expertise, and resources, ensuring that the stories of all Virginians, from every region, are preserved through this lasting collaboration.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Director of Community Partnerships, the Vice President for Education & Engagement, and the President & CEO to identify and initiate contact with prospective affiliate organizations from across the Commonwealth
  • Facilitate conversations between local, regional, and statewide affiliate organizations for the purpose of sharing collections, exhibitions, and expertise
  • Provide administrative support for a variety of affiliate program needs by working directly with colleagues from across VMHC divisions
  • Oversees the intake and coordination process for the Commonwealth History Fund
  • Coordinate, with the Director of Community Partnerships, the development of community relationship-building strategies to increase the VMHC's capacity to serve diverse audiences
  • Collaborate with the larger Education & Engagement team on division-wide initiatives and programs

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Necessary:

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with diverse staff, trustees, volunteers and community stakeholders
  • Superior organizational and project management skills
  • Understanding of the diverse needs of history organizations from region to region

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of training and professional experience
  • One to two years of related work experience successfully cultivating and maintaining relationships with diverse communities
  • Demonstrated ability to manage large scale projects with multiple stakeholders

Note & Special Requirements:

Reliable transportation required for paid travel within the state

Will require occasional early morning, late evening and weekend hours as needed
