                      The Operations Section of King County's Solid Waste Division (SWD) is inviting applications for (1) Career Service position.


Exciting opportunity for an experienced Inventory Purchasing Specialist III in the Stores unit of the Solid Waste Division of King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks! If you like delivering excellent customer service and challenging tasks of finding parts, tools, and equipment while also being financially responsible this is the job for you! This position is responsible for purchasing inventory and services supporting a heavy duty truck/construction equipment shop. This lead position procures specialized services and non-stock items, provides cost analysis, and recommends strategies for finding alternative supply sources, ensuring customer needs are met while controlling costs. This position will also work with contracts department to monitor, research, gather information, and support the facilitation of renewing, and/or initiating purchasing agreements.

About this Role:

This position will prepare, review, and monitor inventory bid specifications. In addition, this position will plan and organize work unit's schedule as well as deliver training and oversee staff, approve time sheets and coordinate assignments and tasks.

The King County Solid Waste Division (KCSWD) is responsible for the public solid waste system that services the people and communities of unincorporated King County and most cities within King County. KCSWD is the lead King County agency for delivering the Zero Waste of Resources goal for the region, which will reduce valuable materials sent to the landfill by up to 70%. KCSWD operates the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill, ten transfer facilities, nine closed landfills, and many programs to design out waste and pollution, keep products and materials in use and regenerate natural systems.

Job Duties


What You Will De Doing:

  • Lead and train personnel to ensure efficient operations.
  •  Support contract development, review, negotiations, administration, and the management of contracts for purchasing goods and services.
  • Aid with the facilitation of fleet maintenance, repair processes, shop work orders and preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Identifying, analyzing, and resolving issues,
  • Adhere to government purchasing procedures and practices related to bidding, awarding contracts and requesting price quotes.
  • Utilizing Oracle Procurement module for a variety of inventory purchasing tasks

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills


Qualifications You Bring:

  • Experience (3 years preferred) leading personnel and/or possess supervisory skills 
  • Experience (3 years preferred) in heavy duty and industrial parts purchasing, fleet maintenance repair process, and preventative maintenance schedules 
  • Working Knowledge of contract development, review, negotiations, administration and management
  • Skill withusing desktop and web-based accounting and inventory management systems
  • Demonstrate knowledge using computer and MS Office Applications (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • Working with accounts payable personnel to reconcile invoices, resolve price discrepancies, freight and tax issues.
  • Aptitude to work closely with others; experience communicating with a diverse range of staff and customers in a pleasant, non-judgmental, respectful, and culturally sensitive manner
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong Written and oral communication skills; organizational skills

It Would be Great if You Also Bring:

  • Knowledge of class 6 box trucks and class 8 tractor trucks. Knowledge ordering parts for heavy-duty construction equipment such as Case, Caterpillar, Volvo, John Deere or similar product lines. Ordering and supplying parts for passenger vehicles as well as light-duty trucks e.g. F 150, F250, F350 and F550. 
  • Requisitioning knowledge of small residential and large commercial and industrial mowers, industrial power plant generators, etc.

Required Licenses/Certifications: Valid WA State Driver's License.

Working Conditions:

Work Location: The operations Section works onsite, The work associated with this position will be located: SWD Maintenance Facility, 201 SW 34th Street, Renton, WA 

  • Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.

King County has a robust collection of tools and resources to support working remotely. The individual selected for this opportunity will join an innovative and progressive team that is redefining how we work as we transition to the department's hybrid environment. Employees will be provided with a County-issued laptop and must maintain a home workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. 

Work Schedule: This position works a 40-hour workweek and is overtime eligible with Supervisor approval. Service hours are Monday to Friday, 5:30am to 2:00pm. May be required to work alternative or flexible work schedules to support core service hours. 

The Solid Waste Division is only closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. In this position, you are considered an essential employee and will be expected to work during weather, health and other emergency events. 

  • Union Representation: This position is represented by Teamsters Local 117 - Joint Units Agreement (JUA). 
  • Physical Environment/Requirements: The candidate must be able to work in confined spaces, outdoors in all weather, high traffic maintenance facility with possible adverse conditions such as noise and dust. The candidate must also have the ability to lift at least 50 lbs. at least once daily with or without assistance.
